Father's Day

The Family Stone has seen much change and excitement in the last month, but riding the forefront were the events of this past weekend: my first Father's Day!

It was like a changing of the guard for me--going from a celebrator to a celebratee was pretty darn exciting, and a once in a lifetime event. I've always enjoyed my wife and son, but last weekend socked fatherhood home on yet another level.

On Saturday, the "Touch-a-Truck" extravaganza was happening at the Louisville Rec Center. That's where the community brings a lot of heavy machinery to one parking lot, so that kids both young and old can come and look and touch and honk and talk and everything! The Fire Department had a fire hose set up, which kids could use to knock over obstacles, and they had an antique fire engine and semi-trucks and bulldozers and tractors and even a helicopter, that took off over our heads while we were there!

Some of the noises were a bit alarming to Myles, but it was very captivating to watch the fire hose and just check out all the other kids running around and climbing into such amazing machines. (Myles was also quite enthralled with the PODs truck a few weeks ago--to the point of "beeping" along with it when it backed up.)

Then, on Sunday, Allyson and Myles surprised me with a lovely breakfast and some gifts, and we went out front to hang out in the pool (okay, it was Myles' wading pool, but it ROCKED!) and do some climbing on the new jungle gym that Allyson picked up this week.

Later in the evening (after a Father's Day dinner of my choosing), Allyson surprised me with a further treat! An ice-cream tasting fiesta!

This was Myles's and my response when we discovered what was happening:

The idea of the fiesta was that there were four different unlabeled flavors of ice cream available, and each contestant (Myles is disqualified until '09) tasted each, speculated on a probable name of the flavor, then ranked it in order. The winning flavor was served as dessert!

It was truly a wonderful end to such an excellent weekend. It's nice to be part of such a great family, and I'm blessed to be so loved.
